Homeostasis and neuroplasticity are two concepts that can help us better understand how hypnosis can create long-lasting changes in behavior and beliefs. These concepts actually explain why accessing the subconscious mind has been an important part of healing among every culture throughout history.

Homeostasis: Homeostasis is our unconscious attempt to maintain a sense of normalcy, which means pushing back against change on a subconscious level. While we may want to find new ways to feel and react, at a deeper level our subconscious defense mechanisms try to maintain the status quo and prevent any change. That’s why talking about feelings, planning changes and dealing with them rationally are important concepts – they’re all on the surface while not addressing the deep-seeded subconscious needs of resistance.

Neuroplasticity: Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change throughout our lifetime. Our ability to form new beliefs, emotional responses, and behavioral habits depends on our flexibility- or mind. But not all people have the right tools to promote change internally; hypnotherapy is one way that hypnotherapists use these tools in a session so people can overcome homeostasis and release their subconscious needs to sabotage their success or resist desired changes in behavior.
